Taxi Ride from Gyeongju to Hongcheon
Fraud and Assault... 1st Trial Sentences 1 Year Imprisonment
A man in his 50s who used a taxi from Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk to Hongcheon, Gangwon, assaulted the taxi driver without paying the fare and was sentenced to prison.
According to Yonhap News on the 6th, "Judge Kim Taek-seong of the Chuncheon District Court Criminal Division 2 sentenced Mr. A (50), who was charged with fraud and injury, to one year in prison."
Mr. A was prosecuted for taking a taxi from a convenience store near Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk, to an auto repair shop in Hongcheon, Gangwon, a distance of over 300 km, without paying the fare of about 400,000 won. When the driver, Mr. B (63), chased after him to collect the fare, Mr. A kicked his leg and hit his face multiple times, causing injuries that required about two weeks of treatment.
Judge Kim stated, "Considering that the defendant committed these crimes during the probation period for theft and that no substantial compensation has been made to date, an appropriate punishment is inevitable."
