Italy is living up to its reputation as a "paradise for pets." Soon, senators will be able to bring their dogs and cats to work at the Palazzo Madama (Senate) in Rome.

Senate President Ignazio La Russa announced on the 4th, World Animal Day (local time), that senators will be allowed to bring their pets to work. However, pets will be prohibited from entering the Senate chamber and refreshment areas, and access will be limited to other parts of the Senate building.

This decision comes in response to long-standing requests from lawmakers. In 2016, Committee Chairwoman Michela Vittoria Brambilla entered the Chamber of Deputies building with her dog, and Senator Michaela Biancofiore has consistently advocated for allowing pets in parliament.

Reactions to this measure are mixed. Some opposition leaders responded with ridicule or argued that focus should be placed on other animal protection issues.

Meanwhile, Italian news channel Sky TG24 gave a positive assessment of the intent behind the measure, even if it might be a one-time event. Citing research from the National Institute of Health, they reported that working with pets helps relieve stress and promotes social relationships.
