On the 4th (local time), the U.S. government described the agreement reached on the cost-sharing negotiations for the U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) defense expenses after 2026 as "a significant accomplishment" for both sides.
The U.S. Department of State stated in a press release that "this agreement will be a significant accomplishment for both parties and will strengthen our alliance and our collective defense."
It also emphasized that "since 1953, the alliance between the United States and Korea has been a cornerstone of peace, security, and prosperity in Northeast Asia, the broader Indo-Pacific region, and beyond."
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, South Korea and the U.S. reached a sudden agreement on the draft of the 12th Special Measures Agreement (SMA) on defense cost-sharing, which will apply for five years starting in 2026.
The contribution for the first year, 2026, was set at 1.5192 trillion won, an 8.3% increase compared to 2025. Subsequent annual increases will be linked to the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
The agreement was reached about a month before the U.S. presidential election, alleviating concerns about the risk of former President Donald Trump, who had imposed heavy burdens on allied countries.
