Daejeon District Court Cheonan Branch Sentences to 3 Years and 6 Months Imprisonment
Repeatedly Assaulted Parents in the Past for Not Giving Allowance
A man in his 20s who repeatedly threatened and assaulted his parents for not giving him allowance was sentenced to prison.
According to the legal community on the 4th, the 1st Criminal Division of the Cheonan Branch of Daejeon District Court (Presiding Judge Jeon Gyeong-ho) sentenced A (25), who was arrested and indicted on charges including special robbery, to 3 years and 6 months in prison.
A was brought to trial on charges of threatening and assaulting his father with a weapon at his parents' home in Asan, Chungnam, last December, and also assaulting his mother who tried to intervene. At the time, A demanded "100,000 won" from his parents but was refused. Enraged by the rejection, he took a weapon from the kitchen, threatened his parents, and forcibly took 100,000 won. A used the money he extorted from his parents for entertainment expenses.
A is known to have repeatedly assaulted and threatened his parents in the past for the reason of "not giving allowance." However, at that time, A's parents expressed their intention not to seek punishment to the investigative authorities, and A was given leniency.
The court pointed out, "The defendant repeatedly committed assault and threats for the reason of not giving allowance before, but each time, the parents expressed their intention not to seek punishment to the investigative authorities, resulting in leniency. However, the defendant did not repent and committed crimes again." Regarding the sentencing, the court explained, "It is difficult to find signs of remorse, so severe punishment is inevitable."
Meanwhile, in August, a man in his 40s who assaulted his elderly parents by destroying household items and strangling his elderly parents who tried to stop him, because they refused his demand to lend money, was sentenced to prison despite his parents' intention not to seek punishment. The Chuncheon District Court Criminal Division 3 (Presiding Judge Park Seong-min) sentenced B (45), who was indicted on charges including violation of the Elderly Welfare Act, violation of the Disabled Welfare Act, and property damage, to 1 year in prison.
B was brought to trial on charges of throwing his 60s mother's glasses to the floor and breaking them, throwing and damaging items such as a coffee pot and dining table, pushing his 70s father who tried to stop him to the ground, climbing on his body, strangling his neck, and punching him at his parents' home in Hongcheon, Gangwon, on April 30. Investigation revealed that B committed these crimes in a fit of anger after his parents refused his demand to lend money, saying they had none. He was also charged with repeatedly damaging other people's property without reason at a local temple, restaurant, and bus terminal ticket office in Hongcheon.
The court stated, "The defendant repeatedly committed crimes causing multiple property damage victims, and the fact that these victims did not reach a settlement is an unfavorable circumstance. Considering that the defendant's parents do not wish for his punishment, the sentence was determined accordingly."
