Next week, a call to a substitute driver company
"Do you even hire people who look like homeless as substitute drivers?"
A story about a man who refused to pay a designated driver because he said the driver smelled bad has sparked controversy.
On the 3rd, an online community called 'BobaeDream' posted a thread titled "Mercedes-Benz man calls a designated driver but refuses to pay because the driver smells." The poster, Mr. A, said, "Last night in the apartment underground parking lot, the car owner said he couldn't pay the designated driver because he smelled bad," adding, "The designated driver smelled his own clothes when told he smelled bad, and that scene was very heartbreaking."
He continued, "The car owner called the designated driver company and angrily asked, 'Do homeless-like people work as designated drivers?' I was very upset," and "The designated driver kept apologizing, which was very painful to see." Mr. A said, "In the end, the car owner admitted the smell but still didn't pay the designated driver," adding, "Eventually, someone watching gave the designated driver the payment via bank transfer. I hope the car owner properly pays and sincerely apologizes to the designated driver."
Mr. A also uploaded a video of the incident. In the video, a man who appears to be the car owner says to the designated driver, "You don't have the basics. You came home, but you risked your life to get here. Isn't this unacceptable?" The car owner also asked in a confrontational tone, "I came for 20 to 30 minutes, and I have to pay 25,000 won to get here? Do you admit you smell?"
The designated driver, who smelled his own clothes, bowed and apologized, saying, "I'm sorry. I admit I smell. I will tell the company not to process the payment."
Netizens who saw the story reacted with comments such as, "Watching the video makes me angry. The designated driver is also someone's father and head of a family, yet not only was he verbally attacked, but he also wasn't paid. That's too much," "The driver must have been very hurt," "Is it worth acting like that over a few thousand won for the fare?" "He should have said something before departure, but to act like that after parking is unacceptable. I hope he gets a proper apology," "He makes all sorts of excuses to avoid paying," and "If 25,000 won is too much, then don't drink at all."
