US Unemployment Claims at 225,000... Exceed Expectations

Increase of 6,000 Cases Compared to Jeonju

Last week, the number of new unemployment benefit claims in the United States exceeded market expectations.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor on the 3rd (local time), the number of new unemployment benefit claims for the week of September 22-28 was recorded at 225,000. This is an increase of 6,000 claims compared to the previous week's figure (219,000 claims) and 3,000 claims above experts' forecast (222,000 claims).

The number of continuing unemployment benefit claims, which counts those claiming benefits for at least two weeks, was recorded at 1,826,000 for the week of September 15-21. This is 1,000 claims fewer than the revised figure for the previous week (1,827,000 claims).

As concerns about a cooling U.S. labor market have emerged recently, investors are closely monitoring employment indicators. The slight increase in new unemployment benefit claims, one of the initial indicators diagnosing employment conditions, is interpreted as a sign that the labor market is gradually slowing down.
