Ahn Cheolsoo Shares His Campus Romance
Recalls Dating Memories with Kim Mikyung
Talks About "I Am SOLO" and His Married Life
Ahn Cheolsoo, a member of the People Power Party, shared details about his past romantic life when asked if he had ever watched the popular dating show "I Am SOLO (Naneun Solo)."
This revelation came through a short-form video series called "Ahn Cheolsoo Toktok," which Ahn posts on social media. When his aide asked, "Have you ever watched 'I Am SOLO'?" Ahn replied, "I've heard of it. I've watched some short clips. However, since I'm not single, I couldn't really relate to it."
When prompted to "share a dating story," he recalled, "I was part of a campus couple. I dated a fellow student who was in the same medical volunteer club as me. Whoever arrived at the library first would save a seat for the other, and that’s how we kept dating all through our student years. We were probably the most well-known campus couple in the medical school," reminiscing about his relationship with his wife.
Regarding "a memorable moment from your dating days," he said, "You can't imagine how much strength it gives you to comfort each other during tough times. There was a time when I was sick and couldn't study for several days, but the exam date was approaching. I remember being comforted when I felt like giving up on everything."
Ahn and Kim Mikyung, a professor of forensic medicine at Seoul National University College of Medicine, are alumni of the same school. Ahn enrolled in 1980, and Kim in 1981. They first met through a university medical volunteer club. The two began dating in their third year of medical school and, after about three years together, got married in 1988 when Kim was in her first year of residency. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the couple volunteered for two weeks at Keimyung University Dongsan Hospital in Daegu, which was facing a shortage of medical staff.
The couple's only daughter, Seolhee, accompanied Professor Kim to the United States for her studies. She double-majored in chemistry and mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania, earning both bachelor's and master's degrees. She later received her PhD in theoretical chemistry from Stanford University and completed her postdoctoral research at California State University, San Diego (CSU).
"I Am SOLO," the show mentioned, is a reality observation program where men and women gather in "Solo Nation" to find love and live together as they search for their partners. It airs every Wednesday at 10:30 p.m. on SBS Plus and ENA.
