Albaegi is an alternative to cabbage that can be used in various dishes such as fresh kimchi and soups or stews. Demand is usually high around September to October when cabbage prices rise due to supply instability. Homeplus explained that it secured quantities in advance from highland areas in Gangwon-do such as Pyeongchang, Jeongseon, and Hoengseong, which are major summer cabbage production regions, to provide high-quality products at affordable prices.
To stabilize prices during the kimchi-making season, Homeplus plans to procure regular cabbage not only from the existing major production area of Pyeongchang, Gangwon-do but also additionally from Mungyeong, Gyeongbuk. Alternative product groups such as spring cabbage and Albaegi will be planned and promoted frequently considering crop conditions. Lee Kyung-ho, a buyer for the Homeplus vegetable team, said, "We will contribute to stabilizing living costs by expanding the supply of 'farm-fresh vegetables' and 'Matnani agricultural products,' which are cheaper than regular retail prices by minimizing the commercialization process, as well as half-price vegetables."
