Pianist Lim Yunchan won two awards at the prestigious British Gramophone Awards ceremony held on the 2nd, receiving both the Piano category award and the 'Young Artist of The Year' award.
At the ceremony held in London, UK, Lim Yunchan was honored with the Piano category award for his Decca debut album released in April, "Chopin: Etudes."
Lim Yunchan was a strong contender for the Gramophone Award in the Piano category this year. Two of the three nominated albums were his. In addition to the "Chopin: Etudes" album, his album "Liszt: Transcendental Etudes," released last June, was also nominated. This album featured live performances from the semifinals of the 2022 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, which Lim Yunchan won.
The other nominated album in the Piano category was by Polish pianist Piotr Anderszewski. Since Lim Yunchan had two of the three nominated albums, he was a likely winner and, as expected, received the award. Lim Yunchan is the first pianist to have two albums simultaneously nominated in the same category at the Gramophone Awards.
The Gramophone Awards are recognized as the Oscars of the classical music recording industry. Established in 1977 by Gramophone, a British classical music magazine founded in 1923, the awards select winners in a total of 11 categories, including piano, orchestra, chamber music, and vocal music.
Among Korean musicians, violinist Kyung Wha Chung won in the chamber music category in 1990 and in the concerto category in 1994, and cellist Han-na Chang won in the concerto category in 2003. Lim Yunchan is the first Korean to win in the Piano category. The Young Artist award was previously won in 1993 by Korean-American violinist Sarah Chang (Chang Young-joo), who was only twelve years old at the time.
