Kyodo News reported that newly appointed Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba held his first phone call with President Yoon Suk-yeol on the 2nd since taking office.
Kyodo News, citing Japanese government officials, stated that Prime Minister Ishiba is likely to have conveyed his intention to continue the trend of improving relations initiated by former Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and President Yoon ahead of the 60th anniversary of Japan-South Korea diplomatic normalization next year.
It also added that the two leaders possibly discussed strengthening Japan-South Korea and Japan-US-South Korea cooperation to counter North Korea's nuclear missile development.
