Dongducheon City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Park Hyung-deok) held a commemorative ceremony on the 2nd at the Sangpae-dong Citizens' Hall auditorium to celebrate the '44th Dongducheon Citizens' Day.'
The ceremony was held to inspire citizens' pride and love for their hometown. About 500 people attended, including Mayor Park Hyung-deok of Dongducheon, National Assembly member Kim Seong-won representing Dongducheon, Yangju, and Yeoncheon, Dongducheon City Council Chairman Kim Seung-ho, key heads of related organizations, leaders of various social groups, public officials, and general citizens.
At the ceremony, Mayor Park Hyung-deok awarded the Citizen Grand Prize to five citizens who contributed to enhancing the honor of the region and stabilizing the local community. He also presented the Gyeonggi-do Citizen Award to eight citizens recognized for their meritorious service in eight fields, including the establishment of law and order, and awarded the Mayor’s Commendation to 15 citizens for their contributions to city development.
In his commemorative speech, Mayor Park Hyung-deok expressed his sincere pleasure to celebrate the 44th Dongducheon Citizens' Day ceremony together with the citizens since the city’s elevation in 1981. He stated that all citizens have united with one heart to pioneer Dongducheon’s future, and especially thanks to the efforts made together with the citizens, Dongducheon has firmly established itself as a transportation hub convenient for subway and vehicle travel, an educational center, and a tourist attraction utilizing forest resources.
However, he noted that there are challenges that must be resolved, such as delays in the return of the U.S. military base, the crisis of population decline, overlapping regulations in the metropolitan area, and underdeveloped infrastructure in northern Gyeonggi Province, and pledged to work with citizens to solve these issues.
Furthermore, since the launch of the 8th local government administration, the extension of the GTX-C line to Dongducheon has been confirmed and is awaiting approval from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. He also mentioned the selection of the education development special zone pilot area, the completion of the natural recreation forest seminar room and Rim Spa, the expansion of the Soyosan parking lot, and that the Facility Management Corporation was launched in September this year. Today, the long-awaited Wondosim Eoullim Center in the old downtown area was opened, marking the beginning of a revolutionary improvement in citizens’ health and childcare environments with facilities such as the citizen swimming pool, Ai Sarang playground, Kids Healthcare Center, and Comprehensive Childcare Support Center.
In addition, regarding the large-scale development plan for northern Gyeonggi Province announced by Governor Kim Dong-yeon of Gyeonggi Province, he stated that the pet theme park public contest project was selected, the relocation of the Gyeonggi Job Foundation will be completed by 2027, the Sangpaecheon stream maintenance will be completed by 2028, and the Dongducheon stream maintenance project will be completed by 2025. He also pledged to cooperate with Gyeonggi Province to promptly promote the support project for medical institutions in medically underserved areas. He added that with the upcoming opening of the complex cultural community center and the construction of the senior citizens’ hall and the disabled persons’ hall, Dongducheon will become a city where all citizens live well together.
He especially mentioned that the first-ever naturally conceived quintuplets born in Dongducheon gave hope to the entire nation, marking a meaningful moment filled with the energy of a bright future for the 44-year-old Dongducheon. He sincerely hopes that all citizens will unite with one heart and move forward together on the path of prosperity through unity and harmony.
Meanwhile, to celebrate the 44th Dongducheon Citizens' Day, Dongducheon City plans to hold a Citizens’ Harmony One-Heart Sports Competition on the 5th at the Comprehensive Sports Complex.
