On the 28th of last month (local time), Vietnamese media Tuoi Tre reported that on the 26th, an unidentified creature appeared at a swimming pool in an apartment complex in Thao Dien Ward, Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh. According to the report, a foreigner renting the apartment visited the pool and discovered "an unknown animal," then reported it to the security guard.
The security guard quickly captured the animal using a racket and rope, and it was identified as a giant monitor lizard. The lizard was a female water monitor lizard measuring about 1.3 meters in length and weighing 8 kg, confirmed to be a rare species facing extinction. The apartment management handed over the lizard to the Ho Chi Minh City Forest Protection Department, requesting that it be well cared for and released back into the wild.
