New North-South Street Parks at Market, Connecting Urban Green Spaces... Scheduled for Completion in 2031
Phase 1 of Facility Modernization Project to be Completed in Second Half of Year... Making Market Attractive to Visitors

Songpa-gu (Mayor Seo Gang-seok) is creating a new linear park on the north and south sides of Garak Market, increasing urban green spaces near Songpa-daero, and making a garden-like, walkable street.

The district announced on the 2nd that it established the "Garak Market Area Revitalization Plan" on August 21 and is now actively implementing it.

This plan was prepared in cooperation with the Seoul Agricultural & Marine Products Corporation to address residents' ongoing demands regarding noise, odor, and lack of resting spaces around Garak Market.

Linked with the district’s flagship project, the "Songpa-daero Premium Street Development," the plan includes the creation of a linear park as part of the "Garak Market Facility Modernization Project" currently underway by the corporation. The project is scheduled for completion in 2031, in line with the modernization efforts.

The linear park will be developed along 1.5 km on the north and south sides of Garak Market, with a width of approximately 30 meters.

On the south side (Dongnam-ro towards Gangnam), it will be designed as a healing walking path resembling a garden, harmoniously blending azaleas, herbaceous plants, and other flora. This considers the high foot traffic near Garak Market’s Line 8 subway station and bus stops. On the north side (Yangjae-daero towards Gangnam), various tree species will be planted to serve as a soundproof and shielding green space between the market and residential complexes.

The district expects the project to create an urban park with multiple functions: buffering noise and odor, providing rest areas for residents and distributors, and connecting the city, market, and ecology, thereby solving local issues and revitalizing the surrounding area.

Additionally, the district will improve the uniform and standardized road flowerpots along Songpa-daero near Garak Market through expert consultations. In coordination with the ongoing "Songpa Avenue Project," which extends from Seokchon Lake to Garak Market Intersection, the area will gradually be transformed into an elegant space that attracts pedestrians’ attention and footsteps.

Seo Gang-seok, Mayor of Songpa-gu, stated, "Garak Market, the center of Korea’s distribution industry, is preparing to become a landmark of Seoul along with the 'Songpa-daero Premium Street Development Project.' We will strive to ensure that visitors can enjoy the vibrant charm of Songpa by walking from Seokchon Lake along the gardens of Songpa-daero to Garak Market, full of sights and vitality."

The district is actively providing administrative support to ensure the smooth progress of the Garak Market Facility Modernization Project. After completing Phase 1 retail area (Garak Mall, June 2015), Phase 2 wholesale area (Sections 1 to 4) is being redeveloped in stages using a circular reconstruction method. The wholesale area Section 1 (Vegetable Building 2) is scheduled for completion in the second half of this year.
