NewJeans' 'Super Shy' Ranked 13th in Pitchfork's 'Best Songs of the 2020s' in the US

The Only One in K-Pop... No.1 is Lana Del Rey's 'A&W'

The title track "Super Shy" from the group NewJeans' second full-length album ranked 13th on the list of "The 100 Best Songs of the 2020s" selected by the American music media Pitchfork. It was the only K-pop song to make the list.

On the 30th (local time), Pitchfork announced "The 100 Best Songs of the 2020s" on its website. Regarding "Super Shy," Pitchfork described it as "a masterpiece that captures NewJeans' effortless charm," stating, "The song uses drum and bass and Jersey club beats to provide a lively chorus without being flashy. All members sing as if sighing in a daydream, inviting listeners to enjoy the fantasy."

Pitchfork added, "While K-pop has always been a stronghold for bold genre blending, NewJeans breathed new inspiration into the existing system, creating multidimensional dance music in a quiet atmosphere."

When "Super Shy" was released last year, it received praise from major global newspapers such as the UK's The Guardian and the US's The New York Times, as well as music magazines like Rolling Stone and Billboard, being selected as the "Song of the Year." It ranked first on Billboard's "Top 25 K-pop Songs" and 38th on the "Top 100 Songs" last year, sixth on Rolling Stone's "Top 100 Songs," and second on the UK music media NME's "Top 50 Songs."

Pitchfork, a media outlet that values musicality over popularity, is globally recognized for its rigorous verification process. Previously, when NewJeans released "Get Up" in July last year, Pitchfork gave it a score of 7.6, the second-highest rating ever for a K-pop album.

In this survey, NewJeans ranked higher than global pop stars such as Beyonc? (24th), Olivia Rodrigo (28th), and Sabrina Carpenter (30th), drawing attention. The first place went to American singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey's "A&W," second to RXK Nephew's "American tterroristt" (2020), and third to Kendrick Lamar's "Not Like Us" (2024).
