Real-time Weather Information Sharing, Inspection of Landslide-Prone Areas and Installation of Flood Barriers

Vice Mayor Jang: "All Administrative Resources Focused on Citizen Safety, Avoid Entering Hazardous Zones"

Pohang City has convened an emergency situation assessment meeting and launched an all-out response as Typhoon Kralaton, the 18th typhoon of the season, is forecast to potentially impact the Pohang area.

Pohang City Holds Situation Assessment Meeting to Prevent Damage from Typhoon Kraton No. 18 Pohang City held an emergency situation assessment meeting to prepare for Typhoon Khanun, the 18th typhoon moving northward, and launched an all-out response.

Typhoon Kralaton is expected to pass near Taipei, Taiwan on October 2, and as early as the 3rd, the intensifying typhoon is projected to affect South Korea.

On the morning of the 30th, the city held an emergency situation assessment meeting presided over by Vice Mayor Jang Sanggil, attended by department and bureau heads, senior officials, district chiefs, and township and neighborhood leaders.

Vice Mayor Jang Sanggil, anticipating damage to the region from the strong typhoon, emphasized thorough pre-inspection and safety measures for vulnerable areas and facilities, as well as focused efforts on controlling high-risk zones and protecting lives through resident evacuation plans.

He specifically ordered thorough on-site inspections, preemptive checks, and safety measures for retaining walls, drainage systems, manholes, and pumping stations to prevent damage from heavy rain, strong winds, and river flooding caused by the typhoon.

Flood control materials will be pre-positioned in areas prone to flooding, and inspections and reinforcements will be conducted in regions at risk of landslides or steep slopes. The Vice Mayor also urged strict preparation to prevent damage to construction sites, crops, and aquaculture facilities from strong winds and high waves.

The city will closely monitor weather advisories and proactively issue emergency work orders during the holiday period to prevent safety blind spots, operating the situation room and disaster safety response headquarters to ensure swift, on-site responses.

By thoroughly preemptively controlling high-risk areas such as riversides in each township and neighborhood, and evacuating residents and operating shelters before heavy rainfall, administrative efforts will be concentrated on preventing any casualties in advance.

Control lines will be installed in areas expected to flood and regions at risk of landslides, and, in cooperation with the police, passage will be restricted to prevent damage to citizens in advance.

The city plans to minimize damage through rapid situation communication and initial response via the disaster safety communication network between related agencies and field departments. If any signs of danger threatening citizens' safety are detected, preemptive on-site measures will be taken through close inter-agency cooperation.

Rescue equipment and personnel will be pre-deployed at key locations for life-saving operations, and drainage pumps and flood control equipment, along with response personnel, will be stationed at pumping stations and frequently flooded areas to ensure immediate response in case of an incident.

Vice Mayor Jang Sanggil stated, "Please concentrate all administrative efforts to ensure thorough preparedness and prevent any damage," and added, "We ask citizens to check weather information through the media, refrain from going out or entering dangerous areas during the typhoon's impact period, and pay special attention to safety."
