Several Chinese influencers have attracted attention by using various clever tactics to gain fame.
On the 30th, Hong Kong's South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported, "As the live streaming and e-commerce industries continue to develop steadily, influencers are employing all kinds of methods to increase their followers and income," introducing four Chinese influencers who have gained popularity in different styles.
According to the report, Han Meizhuan (real name Han Peiquan), who has over 9 million followers on the short-form platform Douyin, gained attention in 2021 by participating in the survival program "Produce Camp 2021," which selects boy group members, with witty remarks. He earned fame with a "crossdressing" persona, attracting sensational popularity on social media with his creative and somewhat exaggerated makeup, flashy wigs, and unique voice.
Known by his real name Dong Guangming, Ironhead initially became known by posting videos exposing scams targeting tourists at seafood markets and lottery scams in supermarkets. Thanks to his content, tourists were able to avoid scams, and Ironhead amassed millions of followers. However, he was once embroiled in controversy for allegedly threatening a live streaming host. Additionally, he attracted attention in June for admitting to graffitiing the word "toilet" on a stone pillar at Japan's Yasukuni Shrine.
Meanwhile, influencer Han Anlan is famous for live broadcasting her personal life, including marriage, divorce, and childbirth. She appeared on the reality show "Exchange" around the age of 16, using the proverb "It's never too late to learn" to say, "There is no age limit for plastic surgery," which sparked debate. By the age of 25, she had experienced four marriages and three divorces and undergone dozens of plastic surgeries, openly sharing her extraordinary life without filters. When giving birth to her first child, she broadcasted her labor live, and recently announced the birth of her second child live as well, even promoting products she endorses. Currently, 3.5 million people follow her on Douyin.
Finally, Yingshang, who has 1.4 million followers on the review platform Xiaohongshu, gained popularity similarly through live streaming. From 2020 to 2021, he proposed to his girlfriend live four times, simultaneously selling products and generating income. Later, his ex-girlfriends admitted that all those proposals were staged and paid for by Yingshang. Despite this, Yingshang reportedly attracted over 1.7 million viewers and recorded sales of 45 million yuan (approximately 8.4357 billion KRW).
