Mayor Kim Dong-geun took on the role of a one-day bookstore keeper at the independent bookstore 'Dongban Books' located in Ganeung-dong on the 28th, communicating with citizens. Kim Dong-geun, mayor of Uijeongbu City, took on the role of a one-day bookstore clerk at the independent bookstore "Dongban Books" located in Ganeung-dong on the 28th as part of the "Into the Lives of the People" program.
"Into the Lives of the People" was organized for the mayor to personally visit citizens' living spaces, workplaces, learning centers, and playgrounds to experience daily life and listen to citizens' difficulties.
On this day, Mayor Kim communicated with citizens by welcoming customers, organizing the bookstore, handling book sales, selecting recommended books, and choosing music that fits the bookstore's atmosphere.
He also had an honest conversation with Shim Seon-hwa, CEO of Dongban Books, about operational challenges and the value of independent bookstores.
Mayor Kim said, "Independent bookstores serve as important hubs where local communities share tastes and culture, beyond merely buying and selling books. I hope Dongban Books, as a member of the local community, continues to share healthy values with residents."
Meanwhile, independent bookstores play a role as cultural hubs by connecting neighborhood residents' tastes through unique book recommendations (curation) not found in large bookstores. Dongban Books, which has maintained its place since 2017, is a small bookstore specializing in books about animals, selling domestic and international single volumes, independent publications, foreign books, and souvenirs.
