Yongsan-gu Conducts Electric Vehicle Fire Response Drill with Itaewon 119 Safety Center

Demonstration of Suppression Using Lower Water Cannon and Other Equipment

Yongsan-gu Conducts Electric Vehicle Fire Response Drill with Itaewon 119 Safety Center Yongsan-gu and Itaewon 119 Safety Center are conducting a demonstration of lower-level water spray nozzle operation during a joint fire response drill for electric vehicle fires. Provided by Yongsan-gu.

Yongsan-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Park Hee-young) announced on the 29th that it conducted joint fire safety education and training with public institutions on the 26th at the Yongsan-gu Comprehensive Administrative Town to respond to electric vehicle fires. The purpose is to alleviate concerns about the spreading electric vehicle fires by strengthening the fire response capabilities of public institutions.

The training was divided into fire safety education and joint fire drills in collaboration with the Itaewon 119 Safety Center. About 60 participants attended, including Yongsan-gu officials who are members of the district office’s self-defense fire brigade, staff responsible for community center buildings, and employees from the Yongsan-gu Facilities Management Corporation Disaster Prevention Center.

During the fire safety education, attendees learned about the characteristics of electric vehicle fires and how to respond to them. Special emphasis was placed on the location and operation of the prepared sprinkler system installed in the district office’s attached parking lot, enabling participants to remember and apply it in case of emergencies.

The joint fire drill was conducted in front of the district office building using an actual electric vehicle. The Itaewon 119 Safety Center demonstrated fire suppression techniques using a lower water spray monitor (upward water spray device) and a smothering fire extinguishing cover, providing hands-on practice.

To ensure residents can safely use the attached parking lot, the district office plans to install lower water spray monitor equipment and smothering fire extinguishing caps in the electric vehicle charging zones by the end of this year. Currently, electric vehicle chargers located on the 5th basement floor of the attached parking lot will all be relocated to the 3rd basement floor, which is closest to the ground, to allow rapid fire brigade access.

Previously, the district has established a comprehensive response system to electric vehicle fires in the area through measures such as fire safety education for apartment complexes, support for fire response safety facilities in apartment complexes, and installation of smothering fire extinguishing covers in public parking lots.

The fire safety education for apartment complexes was conducted on the 6th for about 80 apartment complex officials, covering prevention, evacuation, and response methods for electric vehicle fires.

Support is also provided for fire response safety facilities in apartment complexes. Currently, seven complexes in the area have applied for support to install facilities to prepare for electric vehicle fires. After review by the Apartment Complex Support Deliberation Committee, selected complexes can receive up to 70% of the total project cost.

Smothering fire extinguishing covers have been installed in seven building-type public parking lots where initial fire spread containment is necessary. Next year, fire suppression devices suitable for public parking lot conditions, such as thermal cameras (or cameras dedicated to charging stations) and flame detection sensors, will be installed in public parking lots as part of the response plan.

District Mayor Park Hee-young stated, “We will continue ongoing education and training to ensure rapid response in actual situations. We will also recognize the importance of preventing electric vehicle fires and do our best to support related measures.”
