On the 25th, Ecopro announced on the 29th that a Swedish battery delegation visited the Ecopro Pohang Campus located in the Yeongilman Industrial Complex in Pohang. The Swedish battery delegation, organized by the Swedish Energy Agency, visited the Pohang Campus to benchmark Ecopro's case in order to foster and build an ecosystem for the battery industry in their country.
The Swedish battery delegation consisted of two Swedish government agencies, including the Swedish Energy Agency and the Swedish National Research Institute, as well as 10 electric vehicle and secondary battery companies such as Volvo Group, Scania, Altiris, and Granod Materials. Sweden is recognized as a major European battery production hub with a secondary battery supply chain from raw materials to manufacturing.
The Swedish battery delegation showed great interest in the 'Closed Loop System (CLS·Closed Loop Eco-system)', an anode material manufacturing process system, during their visit to the Pohang Campus.
The Ecopro Pohang Campus is the largest secondary battery anode material cluster in Korea, established in the Yeongilman area of Pohang, Gyeongbuk. It is evaluated to have built an ecosystem linking lithium, precursors, anode materials, and recycling, thereby securing global manufacturing competitiveness.
The Ecopro Pohang Campus was developed with an investment of about 2 trillion KRW since 2017, initiated by the decision of Lee Dong-chae, former chairman and major shareholder of Ecopro, with a capacity to produce 150,000 tons of anode materials annually. It is reported that when executives opposed the massive investment at the time, former chairman Lee persuaded them by saying, "If the business succeeds, the money will follow." The Swedish delegation showed particular interest in Ecopro's unique high-nickel ternary battery technology as well as recycling.
An Ecopro official stated, "There was high interest in the automated anode material manufacturing plant and recycling technology," and added, "We have decided to hold further discussions on areas where business cooperation with the Swedish delegation is possible."
