Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education (Superintendent Lim Tae-hee) announced on the 29th that it held the ‘2024 Second Half Middle and High School English Teacher Capacity Building Training’ at Sono Calm Goyang on the 28th to enhance teachers' curriculum design capabilities following the introduction of AI digital textbooks.
The training was organized to discuss teaching methods tailored to the characteristics of the English subject for the stable introduction of AI digital textbooks in English, Mathematics, and Information subjects in 2025 (grades 3 and 4 in elementary school, grade 1 in middle school, and grade 1 in high school).
About 120 middle and high school English teachers attended the training, which was co-hosted with the Creative Character English Class Design Research Association.
In the keynote lecture, Professor Jung Young-sik from Jeonju National University of Education emphasized the need for a revolutionary transformation in classrooms in the digital era under the theme ‘Future Education with Artificial Intelligence: What to Learn and How to Teach?’ and presented the expertise required for teachers as education professionals.
In the afternoon sessions, teachers participated in two out of six courses they had pre-registered for. Based on an understanding of AI digital textbooks, they designed learner-centered English curricula reflecting individual student characteristics and needs.
The training covered △ Digital Hongik Ingan Project △ Project Classes Utilizing Generative Artificial Intelligence △ Previewing AI Digital Textbooks through AI Courseware △ The Necessity of AI Digital Textbooks in English Education △ Our Culture in the World ? Confident English Speaking Classes for Everyone △ Digital and AI Classes and Assessments to Realize High-Touch High-Tech.
An English teacher who participated in the training shared, “It was not just a training to learn functions but focused on lesson design methods using AI digital textbooks, so there was a lot of content that could be applied in schools, which I found very beneficial.”
Hyun Gye-myeong, Director of the Convergence Education Policy Division at the Provincial Office of Education, said, “There is an academic achievement gap among students in English, so a learning environment tailored to students’ abilities and pace is necessary. We expect that using AI digital textbooks will maximize students’ learning outcomes and strengthen the essence of lessons such as personalized classes, concept-based inquiry learning, and collaborative learning.”
