Silent Gwanghwamun, 25,000 Meditate
Jogye Order 2024 International Seon Meditation Conference
The opening ceremony of the 2024 International Seon Meditation Conference, hosted by the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, was held on the 28th at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul. Monks and laypeople gathered from all over the country created a spectacular scene of meditating together.
The meditation was led by meditation experts from both Korea and abroad, including Jinwoo Sunim, the head of the Jogye Order Secretariat, Geumgang Sunim, Ilsu Sunim, Bulsan Sunim, Roshi Joan Halifax, Thupten Jinpa, Chad Mengtang, Panru Sunim, and Jikme Rinpoche.
Following Geumgang Sunim’s explanation, as the sound of the singing bowl resonated, approximately 25,000 people (according to the organizers) closed their eyes or lowered their gaze and began to focus on their breathing. For about five minutes, a video of sand falling played on a large LED screen, filling the Gwanghwamun area with a sense of tranquility.
The attendees recited the "Prayer for Peace" together, wishing for all beings on Earth to find peace and coexist harmoniously.
