All Middle Schools in Yeosu Have Become Coeducational

Reorganization of 8 Schools in Yeosu District 1 Confirmed
Effective for New Students from March Next Year

The Yeosu Office of Education announced on the 27th that the first school district in Yeosu City, Danseong Middle School (a single-gender school for boys and girls), has been confirmed to be reorganized into a coeducational system.

The target schools are a total of eight: Yeosu Middle School, Yeosu Gubong Middle School, Chungdeok Middle School, Yeosu Jonggo Middle School, Yeosu Girls' Middle School, Jinnam Girls' Middle School, Jinseong Girls' Middle School, and Yeosu Jungang Girls' Middle School.

This reorganization was finalized by the Jeollanam-do Office of Education after going through procedures such as a survey starting in May last year, consultation with the Yeosu Public-Private Industry-Academic Education Cooperation Committee, and administrative notice.

Once the Jeollanam-do Provincial Council amends the ordinance on the establishment of Jeollanam-do provincial schools, the names of the four girls' middle schools will be changed as follows: Yeosu Girls' Middle School to Yeosu Ariul Middle School, Jinnam Girls' Middle School to Yeosu Jinnam Middle School, Jinseong Girls' Middle School to Yeosu Jinseong Middle School, and Yeosu Jungang Girls' Middle School to Yeosu Jungang Middle School.

The schools that will retain their existing names are Yeosu Middle School, Yeosu Gubong Middle School, Chungdeok Middle School, and Yeosu Jonggo Middle School. The reorganization will apply to new students entering middle school in March next year, and all middle schools in Yeosu will operate as coeducational schools.

The Yeosu Office of Education expects positive effects from this reorganization, including ▲expansion of school choice ▲alleviation of inconvenience from long-distance commuting ▲maintenance of appropriately sized classes ▲realization of gender equality education.

Baek Dohyun, the Superintendent of Education, said, “I am grateful to everyone who worked hard on the reorganization of coeducation in middle schools, one of the major issues in Yeosu education, and we will do our best to communicate actively with the local community and educational families to ensure that there is no disruption to student educational activities,” adding, “We will provide active support to offer students a balanced educational environment under the new system.”
