Attempted Murder Charge
A woman in her 30s who sprayed acetic acid on her sleeping husband's face and wielded a weapon was sentenced to prison.
The Criminal Division 11 of the Seoul Northern District Court (Presiding Judge Lee Dong-sik) sentenced Shim Mo (30), who was charged with attempted murder of her husband, to five years in prison on the 27th.
Shim was indicted on charges of attempting to kill her husband by spraying acetic acid and wielding a weapon while he was sleeping, after he demanded a divorce on March 19.
At the time of the crime, Shim was confirmed to have worn goggles and gloves, sprayed pre-prepared acetic acid and boiling water on the victim’s face, subduing the resisting victim. It was also revealed that she chased the fleeing victim and wielded the weapon, attempting to kill him in a premeditated manner.
The court explained the sentencing reason, stating, "Although it was an attempt, the injuries the victim sustained from this incident are not minor," and "It appears that not only the victim but also the family members are experiencing significant psychological distress."
However, the court added, "Since the crime was only attempted and the defendant admitted all charges and is sincerely remorseful," and "The fact that the victim and the defendant reached an agreement and do not wish for punishment was considered a favorable circumstance."
