Distributing Sexually Exploitative Images by Editing School Friends' or Acquaintances' SNS Photos
The Daejeon Metropolitan Police Agency announced that since August 28, it has conducted a crackdown on deepfake sexual exploitation crimes and apprehended a total of three individuals: two teenagers and one person in their twenties.
They are accused of using deepfake artificial intelligence bots to synthesize sexually exploitative materials by combining the social media photos of school alumni or acquaintances, and in some cases distributing these materials to acquaintances or in social media chat rooms.
The police are also making every effort to investigate 14 additional cases where suspects have not yet been apprehended, including actively cooperating with overseas companies such as Telegram and Instagram, and applying for search and seizure warrants even for members who have withdrawn from these platforms.
A police official stated, "Even if you use easily accessible deepfake apps or bots to create or distribute sexually exploitative materials of your friends as a prank, such crimes?including the synthesis or production of false videos involving children or adolescents?are serious offenses that can be punished by life imprisonment or at least five years in prison."
