The General Insurance Association announced on the 27th that it held a completion ceremony for the installation of protective fences to prevent child traffic accidents at Busan Uam Elementary School, together with Green Umbrella Child Fund.
At the completion ceremony, Lee Byung-rae, Chairman of the General Insurance Association, and Lee Soo-kyung, Vice Chairman of Green Umbrella, attended. Park Soo-young, a member of the People Power Party, Ji Yong-gu, Director of Safety Improvement at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and Kang Mina, Deputy Mayor of Nam-gu, Busan, also participated, pledging efforts from the National Assembly, government, and local governments to ensure child traffic safety.
Last year, consecutive child traffic fatalities occurred in school zones, raising the need to strengthen safety facilities. Subsequently, the Road Traffic Act was amended to mandate the installation of protective fences within school zones. To ensure the stable establishment of this system and enhance its effectiveness, private sectors and local governments cooperated to promote this protective fence installation project.
The school route around Busan Uam Elementary School, selected as the project site, is a main road near port facilities with frequent large container truck traffic, making it a section requiring stronger safety facilities for children’s safe commuting. Through this project, the protective fences will be replaced from pedestrian-grade to vehicle-grade (SB2 level) to strengthen safety in the school zone.
Lee Byung-rae, Chairman of the General Insurance Association, said, "I hope that the school route children use every day becomes much safer through this protective fence installation," and added, "The general insurance industry will continue to do its best in various public interest projects to protect vulnerable road users such as children and the elderly."
