Gwanak-gu, First Autonomous District in Seoul to Introduce 'Digital Beekeeping System'

Annual Gwanak Urban Beekeeping Classes Offered... ▲Understanding Beekeeping ▲Seasonal Beekeeping Methods ▲Honey Harvesting and Beeswax Making

Bees, essential for maintaining urban ecosystems, are disappearing due to weakened immunity caused by recent abnormal weather and pests.

Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Junhee) is working hard on urban beekeeping to restore the urban ecology and create a sustainable city through coexistence with bees.

Since 2015, the district has operated a beekeeping site at Nakseongdae Garden, and in 2020, it established another beekeeping site at Gwanak Urban Agriculture Park.

After the flowering season from April to May this year, the district completed two rounds of honey harvesting and is preparing for another harvest in late September. The honey harvested annually is branded as “Gwanaksan Honeybee’s Gift,” a Gwanak-gu original product.

In October, the district will introduce the city’s first “Digital Beekeeping System” among Seoul’s autonomous districts.

The newly introduced system enables more efficient urban beekeeping through ▲real-time monitoring inside the beehives ▲automatic temperature control ▲and recognition of feeding times.

Residents who want to experience urban beekeeping firsthand can apply starting October 2 through the Seoul Public Service Reservation system.

Meanwhile, the district operates the annual “Gwanak Urban Beekeeping Class” to raise awareness about bee protection and the importance of urban beekeeping, providing both theoretical and practical education on beekeeping.

The education program consists of a total of eight sessions covering ▲understanding beekeeping ▲seasonal beekeeping methods ▲honey harvesting and beeswax making.

Mayor Park Junhee stated, “Protecting bees and supporting the urban beekeeping industry is a way to preserve Gwanak-gu’s green spaces and ecosystem,” adding, “We will continue to support urban beekeeping steadily and do our best to create a sustainable Gwanak city.”
