Kim Whanki, a pioneer of Korean abstract art, sold his full-surface dot painting for 7.8 billion KRW at an auction in Hong Kong.
Kim Whanki's 1971 full-surface dot painting '9-XII-71 #216' was sold for approximately 7.819 billion KRW (about 46 million HKD) at the Christie's Hong Kong Evening Day Auction held on the 26th at The Henderson Building in Hong Kong.
This is the third highest price for a piece of Korean contemporary art. Previously, in a 2019 Hong Kong auction, his work 'Universe' (05-IV-71 #200) was sold for about 13.2 billion KRW (including fees, 15.3 billion KRW) at the exchange rate at that time, and in May 2018, at the Seoul Auction Hong Kong auction, Kim Whanki's red full-surface dot painting '3-II-72 #220' was sold for approximately 8.53 billion KRW (62 million HKD) at the exchange rate at that time.
The piece sold this time was listed with an estimated price range of about 7.75 billion to 11.2 billion KRW (45 million to 65 million HKD) and was sold at the lower end of the estimated price.
