Goyang-si Wins 'Korea Local Autonomy Development Award' in Basic Division Mayor Lee Dong-hwan of Goyang City is receiving the '2024 Korea Local Autonomy Development Award' in the basic local government category on the 25th.

Goyang Special City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Lee Dong-hwan) announced on the 26th that it received the ‘2024 Korea Autonomous Development Award’ in the basic local government category on the 25th.

The Korea Autonomous Development Award is presented by the Korea Institute for Autonomous Development, a non-profit organization under the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. It is awarded to members of the National Assembly, local governments, local council members, public officials, and the private sector who have contributed to the development of local autonomy (including local administration, regional development, educational autonomy, and local finance).

Goyang Special City was recognized for solidly establishing the foundation for regional development, such as promoting the designation of the Goyang Free Economic Zone and the designation of an education development special zone, and for revitalizing resident autonomy through the operation of residents’ councils and communication meetings.

It was also acknowledged for actively developing and improving systems for citizen convenience and welfare, and was evaluated as implementing practical local autonomy tailored to the region through numerous nationwide firsts and cases spreading to other areas.

In particular, it attracted attention with citizen-centered policies differentiated from other local governments, such as the nation’s first installation of street-level bus stops and the establishment of a standard for large sidewalk blocks.

Mayor Lee Dong-hwan of Goyang Special City said, “We have done our best not only in the field of autonomous administration but also across the entire city, including the local economy, culture, and welfare, to make Goyang Special City a better place to live. Going forward, we will continue to listen to the voices of citizens and focus solely on them for their happiness.”
