Ministry of Education: "Sample Difficulty is Moderate, to be Released in August Next Year"

The Ministry of Education has released sample questions for the integrated social studies and science subjects to be applied from the 2028 College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT). These questions will be in an integrated form combining previously separate elective subjects, showcasing content that fuses various fields.

On the 27th, the Ministry of Education and the Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation announced sample questions for the integrated social studies and integrated science subjects of the 2028 CSAT.

Earlier, the Ministry of Education announced the '2028 College Entrance System Reform Plan,' stating that the elective subject system in Korean, Mathematics, Social Studies & Science Inquiry, and Vocational Inquiry areas would be abolished, and integrated social studies and science subjects would be introduced.

The Ministry explained, "The questions were developed at an accessible level to help students and teachers understand the integrated social studies and integrated science subjects for the CSAT," adding, "They were developed focusing on questions that clearly demonstrate the characteristics of the integrated social studies and integrated science subjects and the CSAT question format."

On the 26th, the Ministry and the Institute released a total of 14 integrated social studies and 12 integrated science sample questions. The 2022 revised curriculum for integrated social studies is designed to help students integrate various perspectives beyond individual academic boundaries, actively respond to social changes, and cultivate foundational literacy and competencies necessary for future society.

The sample questions include items that comprehensively utilize materials from multiple fields to assess whether students understand concepts, knowledge, and principles related to the characteristics and lifestyles of cultural regions. Additionally, questions include ▲assessing the ability to understand concepts and principles of social phenomena and explore them integratively from various perspectives, and ▲evaluating whether students can comprehensively analyze information presented in data and apply it to specific cases.

The Institute explained, "Unlike the 2015 revised curriculum, where the 'integrated perspective' was not presented as a separate content area, the 2022 revision introduces it as the first content area, encompassing the subject's nature, system, and structure, which is a distinctive feature."

The 2022 revised curriculum for integrated science focuses on helping students acquire basic scientific concepts, develop scientific inquiry skills and attitudes, scientifically understand phenomena encountered in nature and daily life, and cultivate competencies to solve personal and social problems and participate in and practice science.

The sample questions include items that assess whether students can interpret research results presented in graphs or other data by integrating materials from specific fields with big data research. Also included are questions that evaluate ▲the ability to make scientific claims and communicate based on knowledge from various fields, and ▲the application of scientific concepts to phenomena occurring in daily life and the natural environment.

The Institute stated, "The 2022 revised curriculum reflects the purpose of the revision with some changes. The existing content areas 'Matter and Regularity,' 'Systems and Interactions,' 'Change and Diversity,' and 'Environment and Energy' are structured to integrate and cross the four scientific fields (Physics, Chemistry, Life Science, Earth Science). The new areas 'Foundations of Science' and 'Science and Future Society' cover important instrumental language in scientific inquiry and various scientific content necessary for responsible democratic citizens in future society."

Im Sohee, Director of the Talent Selection System Division at the Ministry of Education, commented on the difficulty level of the sample questions, saying, "This time, the questions were generally composed at an accessible level to help understand the subject characteristics and CSAT question features, so it is difficult to explain the difficulty level." She added, "The basic plan for the 2028 CSAT is scheduled to be announced around August next year. We aim to release it as soon as possible considering the burden on students."

Details such as the number of questions, scoring, and exam duration for the 2028 CSAT inquiry section will be provided during the announcement of the '2028 CSAT Basic Plan' in the first half of next year. The Ministry and the Institute plan to develop all questions for areas affected by changes in subjects due to the 2028 CSAT system reform and provide them along with the basic plan.

The developed sample questions are available for viewing on the Institute’s website and the College Scholastic Ability Test official website.
