The University Gugak Festival ‘Jieum III’ is a performance planned by the National Gugak Center in Busan with the aim of preserving and developing traditional arts in the Busan and Yeongnam areas. It serves as a stepping stone for local university students majoring in Gugak, who will lead the future of Korean traditional music.

The stage of the University Gugak Festival ‘Jieum III’ will be an open festival where students majoring in Gugak from the Yeongnam region can empathize and harmonize through traditional music. In particular, to facilitate communication among universities, a joint Gugak orchestra performance will be held again this year, following last year's event, featuring students from the Department of Gugak at Kyungpook National University, the Department of Korean Music at Pusan National University, and the Gugak major at Yeungnam University.

The performance is divided into two parts. The first part consists of programs that showcase the unique characteristics of each university.

The first performance is ‘Boheoja’ by Pusan National University. Boheoja is a type of court music (Dangak) introduced from the Song Dynasty during the Goryeo period, which was adopted as royal court music in both the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties and has been passed down to the present day. It contains the wish to enjoy the peace and prosperity of a golden age and blessings for longevity and health for the listeners.

The second stage features Yeungnam University’s ‘Gyeonggi Daepungnyu - Han Youngsook Style Seungmu.’ ‘Daepungnyu’ is music performed mainly with wind instruments made of bamboo. In the 1960s, master Ji Younghee composed this piece to accompany the Han Youngsook style Seungmu dance, and it is called Gyeonggi Daepungnyu as it is mainly performed in the Gyeonggi region. The performance combines the rhythmic beauty and solemnity of Seungmu, which is characterized by wide sleeves, with the arrangement of Gyeonggi Daepungnyu.

The final stage of the first part is Kyungpook National University’s ‘Sanjo Ensemble - Pungnyu Jieum.’ The Sanjo ensemble transforms Sanjo, originally a solo music genre, into an ensemble piece for the stage. Through the harmony of instruments such as Gayageum, Geomungo, Daegeum, Piri, Haegeum, and Ajaeng, the audience can appreciate the depth of traditional music and the sophistication of folk music.

In the second part of the program, around 90 students from Kyungpook National University, Pusan National University, and Yeungnam University will come together to create a unified sound in a joint Gugak orchestra performance. The orchestra will be conducted by Kim Ran from Kyungpook National University, and the repertoire includes ‘Arirang Rhapsody’ (composed by Lee Jisoo), ‘Young Flower’ for 25-string Gayageum and Gugak orchestra (composed by Son Dahae), and ‘River of Dynamism’ for Gugak orchestra (composed by Lee Jungho).

The performance is free for all school-aged children and above. Reservations can be made online through the National Gugak Center in Busan’s website or by phone.
