Heavy Rain Damage in Jeonnam and Jeonbuk... Cabbage Fields Also Flooded Amid 'Supply Shortage'

About 5% Damage to Cultivated Area This Fall

Due to heavy rain that began on the 19th, crops such as rice, cabbage, and lettuce were submerged or damaged in regions including Jeonnam, Jeonbuk, and Chungnam. In the case of cabbage, whose price has risen due to supply shortages, about 5% of the expected cultivation area for this fall was damaged.

On the 25th, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced that the area of crop damage caused by lodging (when crops fall due to rain or wind), flooding, and other factors reached 15,822.6 hectares as of the previous day. In particular, the damage was concentrated in regions such as Jeonnam (8,932.3 ha), Chungnam (2,655.4 ha), and Jeonbuk (1,565.8 ha).

For cabbage, which has raised concerns about rising food prices due to recent price increases, damage occurred over an area of 667.0 hectares. This corresponds to 5.2% of the expected cabbage cultivation area for this fall (12,870 ha). Due to the heavy rain damage in the main production area of Jeonnam, the scale of damage was notable, second only to rice (698,000 ha).

In Jeonnam, livestock deaths also occurred, including chickens, cattle, and pigs. The scale of damage was 443,000 animals, with chickens accounting for a large proportion (384,000 chickens).

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced a stabilization plan the day before as the summer cabbage production decreased due to climate impacts such as heatwaves and droughts, causing the price per head to rise above 20,000 won. They plan to import Chinese cabbage from China to supply to restaurants and food material companies, with an initial shipment of 16 tons arriving on the 27th.
