Governor Kim Young-rok, "The direction of 1 medical school and 2 affiliated hospitals is right" On the 24th, Jeonnam Governor Kim Young-rok ordered to concentrate all administrative efforts on current issues, including the establishment of a national medical school, during the policy meeting held at the Seo Jae-pil Room of the provincial office.

Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeollanam-do, urged the concentration of administrative efforts on current issues such as the national medical school problem, heavy rain countermeasures, and the establishment of a virtuous cycle in the regional economy by reducing the outflow of local income.

Governor Kim held a policy meeting with department and bureau heads on the morning of the 24th at the Seo Jae-pil Room in the provincial office, stating, “The establishment of the national medical school is being pursued through a public contest and university integration as a two-track approach, but ultimately it will be in the direction of establishing one medical school and two affiliated hospitals.”

He also said, “University integration, which is a prerequisite for a joint medical school, is difficult, so the outlook is negative. It is certainly not an easy path,” but added, “Even if it is difficult, do not dismiss it as impossible due to unnecessary worries. If we support, respond, and work together with the university and the residents in a positive direction, it is possible.”

Regarding the government’s opposition in January to Jeollanam-do’s proposal for a joint medical school, he explained, “At that time, university integration was not mentioned. After exploring various channels, it is now sensed that it is definitely possible if integration is achieved.”

Concerning heavy rain countermeasures, he instructed, “As seen in the recent heavy rain, the possibility of a large amount of rain falling in a short time has increased, so establish fundamental countermeasures and manuals through separate inspections on how to respond to this.”

He also emphasized measures to prevent the outflow of local income. Governor Kim said, “In 2022, the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) increased significantly to 96 trillion won due to improvements in public administration and education sectors, and notably, per capita personal income rose from 13th nationwide in the past to 9th place. However, the outflow increased by 10 trillion won to 32 trillion won, which is a serious problem. Let us prepare measures to reduce this through thorough analysis and research so that the regional economy can circulate positively.”

He also stressed expanding the resident population for regional revitalization and the introduction of a multiple address system. Governor Kim Young-rok evaluated, “The government announced that it would consider birth promotion policies and the inflow of resident population when distributing the general grant tax. Recently, Gurye-gun’s resident population reached 18.4 times its registered population, the highest nationwide, which has a significant ripple effect on the regional economy. If this resident population increases further, a multiple address system will be implemented.”
