"China Passive in US Presidential Election Interference"
As the U.S. presidential election in November approaches, cyber operations by hostile countries have emerged as a threat, with Russia producing the most artificial intelligence (AI) content to support former President Donald Trump's reelection, according to an assessment.
On the 23rd (local time), according to The Washington Post (WP) and others, a U.S. Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) official stated that Russia is generating more AI content related to the U.S. election than any other country. This is intended to raise former President Trump's profile while undermining Vice President Harris.
The technologies Russia uses for its U.S. election operations reportedly range from advanced AI to simple video and text. An ODNI official explained that Russia has manipulated videos of Vice President Harris's speeches using generative AI technology and even produced false videos exposing Harris as a hit-and-run perpetrator by recruiting well-known domestic actors. Microsoft (MS) researchers revealed in a report last week that these videos were promoted through websites posing as San Francisco regional media outlets.
Among the risks cited for the upcoming November U.S. election, Russia, China, and Iran, Russia is assessed to be the most active. An ODNI official emphasized, "Russia knows better than anyone how to exert influence precisely and understands better the mechanics of U.S. elections and what vulnerable targets exist."
China, while also a hostile country to the U.S. comparable to Russia, has been relatively passive in election operations. An ODNI official analyzed, "China is attempting to change global perceptions of China through AI content, but it does not seek to directly influence the outcome of the U.S. election."
Meanwhile, Iran, which has emerged as the greatest threat to the U.S. election, is conducting operations aimed at undermining former President Trump, contrary to Russia. U.S. intelligence agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), stated in a joint statement on the 18th that Iranian hackers hacked into the Trump campaign's confidential data between late June and early July and sent it to Biden campaign officials. Former President Trump is known as an adversary of Iran, having withdrawn from the international nuclear agreement that eased sanctions on Iran and ordered the killing of the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.
