Recently, a video of a man tying up his son with a rope for disciplinary purposes has been spreading on Chinese online platforms, sparking heated debates.

On the 22nd (local time), Hong Kong media South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported, "On the 11th, in central China, an incident occurred where a man tied up his son with a rope to discipline him after the son faced expulsion due to truancy." The incident quickly went viral after a local resident who witnessed the situation recorded and uploaded the video.

The released footage shows a boy struggling with his father, who is trying to tie him up with a rope. The father, Mr. A, has a 15-year-old son who was frequently skipping school and was on the verge of expulsion. A local resident told the media, "Mr. A, who works as a migrant laborer in Zhejiang Province in eastern China, flew about 1000 km straight to Hunan Province after receiving a call from the homeroom teacher saying 'your son is at risk of expulsion'." The resident added, "I often saw Mr. A’s son on the streets and he was addicted to smoking, drinking, and gambling."

After returning to Hunan Province, Mr. A found his son on the street and tried to take him by saying, "Let's go to the police station for education." However, the son resisted, and during this process, Mr. A tied his son's body with a rope to take him to the police station. The video captures Mr. A’s voice crying out, "Why don’t you go to school?" Shortly after, the police arrived at the scene to mediate the conflict between father and son, and the situation was resolved for the time being.

The disciplinary method used by Mr. A sparked intense debate on Chinese online platforms. Some netizens criticized Mr. A’s actions as "clear abuse." They commented, "The father should have chosen a different disciplinary method," "How can he do that in public where everyone can see, not even inside the house?" "I think I understand why the child went astray," "The child is a person too. Respect him," "He’s not fit to be a father," "This is not discipline but venting anger," and so on.

On the other hand, some defended Mr. A. They said, "I understand the father’s feelings who had no other choice," "It is a father’s role to correct a wayward child," "That son will surely be grateful to his father someday," "How desperate must he have been to do that," "There are so many kids who don’t listen to words," "Those who criticize the father probably never raised children," "Leaving a son addicted to alcohol, smoking, and gambling alone is abuse," expressing sympathy for Mr. A.
