On the 22nd (local time), at the Wentworth Club (Par 72, 7,267 yards) in Virginia Water, Surrey, England, the DP World Tour (formerly European Tour) Rolex Series BMW PGA Championship (total prize money $9 million) concluded. After tying with Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland) and Tristen Lawrence (South Africa) at 20 under par 268, Horschel secured the ‘winning eagle’ in the second sudden-death playoff hole at the 18th hole (par 5).

Since winning this tournament in 2021, Horschel earned his third European Tour victory in three years, with a winner’s prize of $1.53 million (approximately 2 billion KRW). He became the first American player to win the BMW PGA Championship twice. With this ‘big match’ victory, his world ranking jumped from 24th last week to 17th.

Horschel is a player who has won eight times on the PGA Tour. In September 2014, he won the BMW Championship in the third round of the playoffs and then consecutively won the Tour Championship in the fourth round, becoming the FedEx Cup champion. At the Tour Championship, he defeated then world number one McIlroy. This year, he also collected a winner’s trophy at the Corales Puntacana Championship in April.

Horschel demonstrated stable skills throughout the four days of this tournament. He scored 5 under par 67 on the first day, 3 under par 69 on the second day, 7 under par 65 on the third day, and 5 under par 67 on the final day. His driving, irons, and putting were outstanding. On the last day, his average driving distance was 305 yards (10th), putts per green in regulation were 1.5 (4th), and his scrambling ability?making par or better when missing the green?was 71.4% (29th), which was also excellent.

Horschel used a Titleist GT3 (9 degrees) driver and Titleist TSi2 fairway woods (15, 18 degrees) that perfectly combined distance and forgiveness. His wedges were Titleist Vokey SM10 (46, 52, 56, 62 degrees), his putter was a Ping Sigma2 Tyne 4, and his ball was a Titleist Pro V1.
