Dongducheon City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Park Hyung-deok) announced on the 23rd that it has finalized the recipients of the '36th Dongducheon City Citizen Awards,' which recognize citizens who have devoted themselves to the local community with exceptional patriotism.
The judging committee selected winners in five categories: Nam Myung-woo (72, female) in the Social Service category, Park Ki-kyung (58) in the Local Economy category, Yoon Myung-hwan (74, female) in the Filial Piety and Good Deeds category, Kim Sung-joo (65, female) in the Culture and Arts category, and Lee Jae-hoon (57) in the Sports Promotion category.
The Dongducheon City Citizen Awards were first established in 1989 to honor citizens who have greatly contributed to enhancing the city's honor and the development of the local community, bestowing pride and prestige upon them. Up to last year, a total of 164 recipients have been awarded over 35 ceremonies, and this year, 17 candidates competed across five categories.
Nam Myung-woo, selected in the Social Service category, has been involved in various volunteer activities since starting with the Korean Red Cross in 1983. In particular, she has accumulated specialized knowledge in Sujichim (acupuncture with thin needles) and has taken the lead in promoting citizens' health through Sujichim volunteer work.
Park Ki-kyung, chosen in the Local Economy category, is an entrepreneur who founded Gwangjin Electric within the city and has dedicated himself to the development of Dongducheon’s electric power. He has also worked on projects such as the Dongducheon Local History Museum and the electrical work for the downtown public parking lot construction, striving to create an environment where citizens can use electricity conveniently and safely.
Yoon Myung-hwan, selected in the Filial Piety and Good Deeds category, has personally cared for her in-laws for 35 years and engaged in nursing care activities. Despite harsh living conditions, she has raised four children admirably, serving as a role model.
Kim Sung-joo, chosen in the Culture and Arts category, has served as the head of the Dongducheon branch of the Korea Theater Association and has been involved in numerous productions.
She has also played a significant role in enhancing Dongducheon citizens' access to culture and arts through programs such as theater education for the disabled and outreach cultural activities.
Lee Jae-hoon, selected in the Sports Promotion category, served as president of the Songnae-dong Sports Association and led the citizens’ unity sports competition to two consecutive victories. He has actively participated in local events, fostering community harmony.
Meanwhile, the recipients confirmed as winners of the Citizen Awards on this day will receive certificates and medals at the Citizen’s Day commemorative ceremony on the 2nd of next month.
