Awarded consecutively in the 15th, 19th, and 20th editions
Hanseo University won the Excellence Award, the Korea Aerospace Industry Promotion Association President's Award, at the Korea Robot Aircraft Competition.
According to Hanseo University on the 23rd, the URACUS team from the Department of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and the Aerospace Unmanned Systems Control Laboratory received the Excellence Award, the Korea Aerospace Industry Promotion Association President's Award, at the 22nd Korea Robot Aircraft Competition held on the 7th at Taean UV Land.
Hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Korea Robot Aircraft Competition is the most prestigious unmanned aerial vehicle competition in Korea. Participating teams must complete missions through automatic flight without pilot intervention using their self-developed unmanned aerial vehicle systems.
In this robot aircraft competition, the mission involved automatic vertical takeoff after boarding a model passenger, capturing target images and flying at low altitude, then ascending to a higher altitude, avoiding obstacles on the landing approach path, and automatically landing at the vertiport to safely disembark the passenger. A total of 34 teams applied, and after the first technical review (May) and the second technical review (July), the preliminary round was held. Finally, 8 teams advanced to the finals to compete.
The Hanseo University URACUS team utilized automatic flight technology, video-based object tracking, and gimbal control technology to pass designated waypoints and capture ground targets. Additionally, to avoid obstacles on the approach path, they developed their own obstacle avoidance and flight path recovery technology, successfully avoiding obstacles and safely returning to the vertiport at the takeoff point, earning the Excellence Award.
The award ceremony is scheduled to be held at the '2024 K-UAM Confex,' a UAM/AAM exhibition, on the 31st of next month.
Since the 12th competition, the Hanseo University URACUS team has participated and has a history of achievements including winning the Grand Prize at the 19th competition with the mission 'Drone Catching Drone,' the Excellence Award at the 15th competition with the mission 'Safe Return Drone,' and the Excellence Award at the 20th competition with the mission 'Urban Balcony Delivery.'
Kim Hyun-sung, Vice President for Industry-Academia Cooperation and head of the LINC3.0 Project Group at Hanseo University, stated, “As an aviation-specialized university, we continue to achieve consistent results,” and added, “We will spare no support in nurturing talents with unmanned aerial vehicle technology, a future industry.”
