Ship equipment manufacturer Hanla IMS announced on the 23rd that it has become the first company in Korea to obtain ship cybersecurity compliance certification from the Korean Register (KR).
Previously, the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) distributed the 'Ship Cyber Resilience (UR E26·27)' standards and mandated the application of cyber resilience regulations for all ship contracts signed after July this year. This move comes in response to recent years' cyberattacks targeting ships, which have led to incidents such as hacking of ship management software servers and ransomware infections, causing damage to domestic and international shipbuilding and marine companies and raising cybersecurity as a major issue.
The cybersecurity compliance certification obtained by Hanla IMS applies to onboard operational technology (OT) systems aimed at reducing threats to human life, ships, and the environment caused by cyber incidents, in accordance with IACS's UR E27 regulations. It also meets IACS's environmental testing regulations (UR E10) and equipment safety regulations for software functions (UR E22).
This certification acquired by Hanla IMS is the first formal approval certificate for cyber resilience issued by the Korean Register in Korea. The approval process involved thorough review of stringent security requirements, including CBS asset inventory, topology diagrams, security function descriptions, security capability test procedures, security configuration guidelines, secure development lifecycle, maintenance and verification plans, incident response and recovery plans, change management plans, and test reports.
The certification has been applied to various products including Hanla IMS's Valve Remote Control System (VRCS), and key products such as Ballast Water Treatment Systems (BWTS), loading computers, shipboard level measurement devices, and fuel tank monitoring systems are planned to be renewed with enhanced security features in the future.
By obtaining this certification first in Korea, Hanla IMS has taken a lead over competitors by promptly meeting cybersecurity compliance requirements, establishing itself as a frontrunner in this field. Based on this, Hanla IMS plans to strengthen the security of its product lineup and provide the best solutions that shipowners can trust and choose with confidence, further solidifying its influence in domestic and international markets as an industry leader.
A Hanla IMS representative stated, “Through this achievement, Hanla IMS has firmly established itself as a leading company in the cybersecurity field and can now offer customers safer and more reliable products,” adding, “We will continue to focus on enhancing ship safety and cybersecurity to maintain a competitive edge in the market.”
