Controversy Over Lecture by Chinese Education Company for Civil Service Exam Candidates
Message: If Successful, You Will Date Younger Women When Older
If Not Successful, Your Daughter Will Date Someone Her Age
Past Remarks Included "Becoming a Civil Servant Means Having the World and Women"
"If you don't work hard, your daughter will end up in the arms of men your age, but if you work hard, you will hold the daughters of men your age."
A Chinese civil servant education company has sparked controversy for delivering absurd content in its training for civil service exam candidates.
On the 23rd, Hong Kong's South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that a Chinese civil service exam education company called Hwatu Corporation was found to have used sexist materials in its training. According to the report, the training explained that daughters of people who do not work hard enough to reach high social status are destined to become the wives or mistresses of wealthy older men. Conversely, those who work hard to become influential elders take the young daughters of unsuccessful people as their wives or lovers.
Hwatu Education Group, headquartered in Beijing, operates over 1,000 education centers nationwide and is one of the largest specialized civil service exam training companies in China. SCMP reported, "In recent years, especially with the sharp rise in youth unemployment, this company's courses offering tips on how to succeed in civil service exams have become increasingly popular."
Upon learning this news, Chinese netizens expressed outrage. One netizen said, "I can't believe such a big company could do something like this," while another asked, "What have our women done to deserve this?" Criticism also arose, questioning, "If marrying young women is considered the ultimate goal, what kind of civil servants are they cultivating?" Many netizens said, "If people with such bad values become civil servants, I can't imagine how terrible our country would be."
As the controversy grew, the company explained that the female teacher's remarks were made in jest and stated that the teacher was ordered to reflect and prevent recurrence. They also promised to review their teaching materials more thoroughly in the future.
Previously, in 2020, one of the company's education centers in Hubei Province displayed a banner that read, "Become a civil servant. The world and women are in your hands."
