Commons Field Chuncheon Hosts Final Showdown of 6 Teams
Winning Team from the US Earns Opportunity to Attend 'AWS re:Invent 2024'
Chuncheon City (Mayor Yuk Dong-han) announced on the 23rd that the finals of the ‘2024 Chuncheon AWS DeepRacer Championship’ will be held at 10 a.m. on the 29th at Commons Field Chuncheon.
Hosted by Chuncheon City and organized by the Gangwon Information and Culture Industry Promotion Agency, this competition is being held for the second time this year following last year, with sponsorship from Amazon Web Services (AWS).
DeepRacer is an 1/18 scale AI fully autonomous racing car launched by AWS. It operates using a cloud-based 3D racing simulator and Reinforcement Learning.
Participants design their own autonomous driving algorithms, install them on the DeepRacer, and compete by recording the shortest and most accurate lap times on the race track. Sixty teams competed fiercely in the online preliminary and main league rounds, and six teams will compete for the final rankings in the championship finals.
The finalist teams are ▲Tokyo-Drift (DGIST (Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology)) ▲Gersche (Keimyung University) ▲Tashu (Konyang University) ▲Shark Holmes (Sookmyung Women’s University) ▲DBDBDeep (Keimyung University) ▲Yumi and Nayeon’s Team (Kangwon National University).
Following last year’s competition, this year also introduced a system that uses object detection, one of the AI vision technologies, to automatically detect when vehicles leave the track or touch the starting line. This minimizes human intervention and improves the accuracy of records, allowing AI technology to control the competition management as well.
The first-place team will receive the Chuncheon Mayor’s Award, prize money, and an opportunity to attend ‘AWS re:Invent 2024,’ the world’s largest cloud event held in Las Vegas, USA, at the end of this year.
The finals of the ‘2024 Chuncheon AWS DeepRacer Championship’ will be broadcast live on Chuncheon City’s YouTube channel.
A Chuncheon City official said, “We expect participants to grow into key talents leading the AI autonomous driving industry through this competition,” and added, “We will continue to promote future industry development and talent cultivation projects through cooperation with global software companies.”
