On the 23rd, LG AI Research Institute announced that it signed a contract with the international standardization organization IEEE-SA (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Standards Association) in mid-April. The institute plans to lead international AI ethics standards together with IEEE-SA. IEEE-SA is a globally recognized standard development and certification organization in the field of electrical and electronic engineering, with 34,000 experts from 175 countries operating over 2,100 international standardization projects.

LG AI Research Institute will operate the 'IEEE CertifAIEd' certification program. This program supports companies in developing AI technologies that comply with international standards and are trustworthy in areas such as transparency, algorithmic bias, privacy, and accountability in ethics and safety.

To create an ecosystem for developing trustworthy AI, the institute plans to promote the certification program targeting AI products and services of LG affiliates and global partners. It will also run AI ethics education programs to raise awareness among AI developers and users about the importance of ethical AI technology.

Alpesh Shah, President of IEEE-SA, said, "IEEE collaborates with UNESCO, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and others from standardization preparation to conformity assessment and certification," adding, "We are pleased to work with LG, which shows a serious and responsible attitude toward AI ethics issues, on this certification program."

Baek Kang-hoon, Head of LG AI Research Institute, said, "We will take pride in being the first official Korean partner of the IEEE AI ethics certification program," and added, "We aim to contribute to strengthening AI accountability and transparency so that AI develops in a way that provides beneficial value to humanity and society while respecting human rights."

Meanwhile, LG AI Research Institute will be the only Korean company participating in the AI safety session hosted by the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) at the UN Future Summit held in New York this month. Kim Yoo-chul, Head of the Strategy Division, will present a case study on establishing risk management systems for AI systems throughout their lifecycle, from research and development to utilization and disposal.

Following its selection as UNESCO’s first domestic AI ethics implementation partner last November, LG AI Research Institute joined the private sector international AI ethics organization 'UNESCO Business Council' this year. It is also the only Korean company to sign the 'AI Election Agreement,' a joint declaration by big tech companies to prevent deepfakes.
