"Meeting of Prehistoric and Modern Times"... 'Gangdong Seonsa Cultural Festival' to be Held from Next Month 10 to 13

Seoul Gangdong-gu (District Mayor Lee Soo-hee) announced on the 23rd that it will hold the “29th Gangdong Prehistoric Culture Festival” from October 11 to 13 at the Amsa-dong archaeological site area in Seoul.

The 29th Gangdong Prehistoric Culture Festival is the only representative festival in Seoul that is held with the prehistoric era as its background. This year’s theme is “Meeting the 6,000-Year Story Today.” With the opening of the subway Line 8 Amsa History Park Station this year, accessibility to the event venue has greatly improved, and it is expected that the number of visitors coming from nearby areas such as Guri and Namyangju will increase.

The event venue is organized into separate spaces themed around the four elements used in pottery making: “fire, water, earth, and wind.” Each space will be filled with productions and various exhibition and experience programs suited to the characteristics of the materials, offering visitors a special enjoyment that transcends past and present.

On the first day of the festival, October 11, the Gangdong-gu Folk Arts Group’s pungmul team will open the festival with the “Dream Parade,” followed by a competition of autonomous community center programs. Then, a themed performance titled “A Mysterious Journey Back in Time” will take place, featuring ▲ trot emperor Jin Sung ▲ Lee Jae-hoon of Cool ▲ singer Bada on stage. A spectacular drone show will climax the first day of the festival, marking the official start.

On the second day, October 12, diverse and rich programs will deliver a festive atmosphere to visitors, including the reenactment of Seoul City Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 10 “Bawijeol Village Hosangnori,” a “Festival for Families with Disabilities” where a performance team composed of people with severe disabilities showcases various talents in unison, and the “Gangdong Prehistoric Singing Contest” where Gangdong residents can freely express their hidden talents.

On the final day, October 13, the “Prehistoric Rock (樂) Festival” planned directly by cultural and artistic clubs of local middle and high schools will be held, along with performances by the Gangdong-gu Arts Group. Additionally, a humanities lecture that combines prehistoric themes with humanities topics in an easy and entertaining way will be conducted.

From 7 p.m., the closing celebration performance will take place on the main stage, the Land of Fire. Kim Yeon-ja, Kim Wan-sun, and Kim Tae-woo of g.o.d will take the stage to deliver passionate performances. A dazzling fireworks show will decorate the finale of the Gangdong Prehistoric Culture Festival, grandly concluding the event.

One of the highlights of this festival is the nighttime program themed around “light.” The “Media Facade” held in the Land of Earth projects 6,000 years of time onto the outer wall of the Amsa-dong Prehistoric Museum, showing the past, present, and future. Also, the “Prehistoric Night Walk,” which adds light to natural objects within the Amsa-dong archaeological site, creates an atmosphere as if entering a mysterious forest, offering visitors the beautiful mood of an autumn night.

The “Prehistoric Performer Group” will parade around the event venue during the festival, engaging with visitors. There are also experiences such as the “Prehistoric Barbecue Experience,” where visitors can grill meat skewered on large fire pits themselves, and the “Neolithic Archaeology Experience School,” where participants can try making polished stone tools and archery.

Starting October 8, the Amsa-dong Prehistoric Museum will hold its first special exhibition, “Prehistoric Artists.” Conducted in cooperation with the Seokjang-ri Museum in Gongju City, this exhibition will display over 120 items including Paleolithic cave paintings, female figurines, animal sculptures, as well as Neolithic comb-pattern pottery and clay figures.

District Mayor Lee Soo-hee stated, “We hope families and acquaintances visit together to create shining memories and fully immerse themselves in the charm of Gangdong-gu.”
