Busan Metropolitan City announced that the completion ceremony for Microsoft’s second data center will be held at 2 p.m. on the 23rd in Gurang-dong, Gangseo-gu.
This ceremony is organized to commemorate the completion of the second data center and to strengthen cooperation between Microsoft and the city for the construction of an artificial intelligence (AI) cloud data center.
Microsoft, a major foreign investor in information technology (IT), is currently building a flagship data center for the Asia region within the International Industrial Logistics City in Gangseo-gu.
In April 2020, Microsoft completed and began operating its first data center in the Busan International Industrial Logistics City, and today marks the completion of the second data center, which is even larger than the first.
Approximately 100 people are expected to attend the ceremony, including Mayor Park Hyungjoon, Alvin Hung, General Manager of Microsoft Datacenter Operations for APAC, National Assembly member Kim Doeup, Kim Kiyoung, Commissioner of the Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone Authority, and officials from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
The event will proceed in the following order: screening of a progress video, congratulatory remarks, awards for outstanding partner companies, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The city is working with the Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone Authority to secure tenancy agreements and other arrangements for the construction of Microsoft’s third AI cloud data center.
The city has made various efforts to ensure a stable supply of electricity?a key factor in the successful construction of Microsoft’s data centers?by cooperating with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Korea Electric Power Corporation, and the Cultural Heritage Administration.
Microsoft headquarters also recognizes Busan as a major hub in Asia and, trusting in the city’s efforts, is actively pursuing further expansion of its data centers. Various community contribution programs are being planned, including job creation through data center construction, IT talent development academies, and internship opportunities.
Alvin Hung, General Manager of Microsoft’s Datacenter Operations, APAC, stated, “We are very pleased to have successfully completed the data center thanks to the cooperation of Busan Metropolitan City and related organizations. This demonstrates Microsoft’s commitment to contributing to sustainable future development and enhancing the prosperity and welfare of the local community as a responsible neighbor.”
Microsoft’s ‘Data Center Community Pledge’ promises sustainability, community prosperity, and responsible operations to ensure a positive impact on the local community through its data centers. The pledge includes goals for carbon neutrality, water conservation, and zero waste, and provides benefits such as education, job creation, and environmental protection in collaboration with the community. More information is available at Microsoft Local.
Mayor Park Hyungjoon stated, “The continued investment of global IT companies like Microsoft is highly symbolic for Busan’s vision as a ‘global hub city.’ We will continue to provide administrative support to ensure the successful execution of these projects.”
