Creation of Green Corridor Connecting Junggye Neighborhood Park and Deungnamu Culture Park in Nowon-gu

Demolition of Aging Pedestrian Overpass Connecting Junggye Neighborhood Park and Deungnamu Culture Park
Creation of Eco-Friendly Green Path Accessible to Elderly, Wheelchair Users, and Other Pedestrians with Mobility Challenges

Nowon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it has created an attractive "sky garden" over the road by connecting two parks separated by a road with an eco-friendly green corridor.

Junggye Neighborhood Park and Deungnamu Culture Park, located in Junggye-dong, Nowon-gu, have been beloved resting places for local residents since their establishment in 1986. With excellent accessibility, various fairs and cultural events are frequently held on weekends, making these parks especially popular among residents.

However, the two parks are divided by Dongil-ro, which runs through the center of the district, resulting in low spatial and movement efficiency. Additionally, the pedestrian overpass connecting the two parks has been consistently criticized for being narrow and steep, making it difficult for vulnerable pedestrians to use.

In response, the district undertook the creation of a "green corridor" in 2022, coinciding with the remodeling of the aging overpass, replacing the overpass designed solely for transit with a connection that allows the two parks to be used as one unified park.

First, the district relocated the existing overpass, which was situated in the center of the parks, to a new green corridor in front of the North Seoul Museum of Art and the Nowon Astronomical Science Museum. This was done to facilitate convenience for users of both facilities and to efficiently utilize the large central space of the parks.

The completed green corridor, constructed through civil engineering works, gently slopes to naturally connect the two parks as an extension of the walking paths. The corridor is 35 meters long and 15 meters wide, designed considering a 2-meter-wide walking path for families, a 2-meter-wide wheelchair passing lane, and green spaces on both sides.

For safety and aesthetics, safety fences were added along the outer edges of the corridor. To ensure safe use by vulnerable pedestrians such as the elderly and wheelchair users, the ramp surface was treated with an anti-slip coating, and the walking path was constructed using elastic materials to enhance pedestrian comfort.

Finally, a "charming garden" featuring seasonal themes will be created on top of the green corridor. Various flowers such as tulips and daffodils in spring, and asters in autumn, will be planted to provide pedestrians with a rich visual experience throughout the year.

Meanwhile, the combined area of the two parks reaches approximately 60,000 square meters. With cultural, artistic, and educational facilities located within the parks, as well as surrounding shopping malls, the area is expected to be reborn as a representative urban complex healing town in the Nowon region.

Mayor Oh Seung-rok said, “We have carefully attended to every detail to present a space open to everyone, a park that anyone can enjoy.” He added, “We will continue to nurture the sky garden created through the green corridor so that it can become the central garden (Central Park) of Nowon-gu.”
