Couple Sentenced to Probation for Assaulting Debtor and Seizing Money and Valuables
A suspended prison sentence was handed down to a couple who assaulted a debtor and took money and valuables, demanding repayment of borrowed money.
The Criminal Division 11 of Cheongju District Court (Presiding Judge Tae Ji-young) announced on the 21st that A (56) and B (57), who were tried on charges of special robbery, were each sentenced to 2 years and 6 months in prison with a 4-year suspension.
The couple is accused of restraining the victim's arms and neck to prevent movement and assaulting the face in Cheongju in August 2022, then putting their hand into the victim's pocket and robbing about 2.7 million won in cash.
It was revealed that A and others committed the crime after the victim borrowed money and failed to repay it. During the trial, they denied the charges, claiming, "We only caught the victim because they tried to run away without paying the money," but the court did not accept this.
Presiding Judge Tae said, "The crime is serious as the victim was forcibly restrained and property was taken by force," adding, "However, considering that the scale of property damage was not large compared to the danger of the crime itself and that 3 million won was deposited for the victim, the sentence was determined accordingly."
