Busan Dialect Writing Contest, Busan Dialect Competition, etc.
October 9 at Busan City Hall Grand Auditorium and Nogeum Square
The Dong-A University Korean Language Culture Center (Director Kim Youngsun) will hold the "8th Korean Language and Script Love Festival" to celebrate the 578th anniversary of the proclamation of Hunminjeongeum and to promote the beauty and value of the Korean language and script.
This event, hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Busan Metropolitan City and organized by the Dong-A University Korean Language Culture Center and Busan Korean Language Guardians, will take place on the first floor main auditorium and Nokum Square of Busan City Hall on October 9, Hangul Day, for the citizens of Busan.
From 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on that day, the "Busan Dialect Writing Contest" will be held at Nokum Square. This contest, being held for the first time this year, is open to elementary, middle, and high school students nationwide. Pre-registration is available until October 6, and on-site registration is also possible on the day of the event.
The contest is divided into elementary and middle/high school divisions and will be held at the same time. The topic will be announced on-site. After registering from 10:00 a.m., participating students will receive manuscript paper and can freely write at Nokum Square. However, each participant can only compete in either the poetry or prose category, not both.
The judging will be conducted separately for elementary and middle/high school divisions, and for each division, three students each will be selected for the top prize, second prize, and merit prize in both poetry and prose categories, for a total of 12 awardees. The awards ceremony is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on the same day.
Also, from 11:50 a.m. for one hour at Nokum Square, the "Busan Dialect Quiz Contest" will take place. This contest is open to all citizens regardless of age, and participants will solve questions related to Busan dialect vocabulary and intonation in a format similar to the TV program "Challenge Golden Bell."
The results of the contest, along with those of the "Busan Dialect Writing Contest" held earlier, will be announced in the afternoon, and one winner each will be selected for the top prize, second prize, and merit prize, according to the contest results.
In the afternoon, a "Hangul Day Special Lecture" will be held for citizens in the main auditorium on the first floor of Busan City Hall. The lecture, which will cover interesting and useful topics related to Hangul Day and the Korean language and script, will also provide hints for the "Korean Language Quiz Contest" that follows, adding fun and excitement to the Hangul Day event.
After the special lecture, the "Korean Language Quiz Contest" will be held in the main auditorium. Unlike last year, this contest is open to all citizens regardless of age, and participants will solve questions related to the Korean language. One winner each will be selected for the top prize, second prize, and merit prize, and the awards ceremony will be held immediately after the contest.
Meanwhile, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., the "Hangul Five Senses Experience Center" will be held at Nokum Square in Busan City Hall. With the themes "Meet," "Listen," "Touch," "Breathe," and "Taste" the Korean language and script, the experience center will feature programs such as "Becoming King Sejong," "Making a Hangul Bag," "Making Traditional Pattern Balloon Art," and "Tasting Korean Words," allowing participants to experience the Korean language and script with all five senses.
Those wishing to participate must register in advance by October 6. Registration can be completed by filling out and submitting the application form (Google survey) available on the Dong-A University Korean Language Culture Center website or in the introduction section of the Center's Instagram. Applications can also be made by phone or in person at the Dong-A University Korean Language Culture Center.
