The Yangyang Songi Salmon Festival, a representative festival held every autumn in Yangyang-gun, Gangwon-do, will take on a special meaning this year by transforming into an ecological festival centered on gratitude for the great outdoors. This year’s festival will be held under the theme “The Meeting of Seorak and Namdaecheon, Thank You Yangyang.”

The overall spatial composition will shift focus from sales-centered to creating a nature-friendly environment and cultural enjoyment, providing family visitors with opportunities to learn the importance of ecology through experiential activities in nature. Additionally, by preparing nighttime light sculpture streets, nighttime experience programs, and nighttime performances, the festival grounds will be lively until late at night. The Namdaecheon ecological tourism train will also be expanded to operate up to Songi Park, allowing visitors to enjoy the pristine natural scenery of Namdaecheon.

The popular ‘Bare-Handed Salmon Catching’ experience program, loved by visitors every year, will be maintained and developed. A new tasting corner called ‘Kkochi Hansongi’ has also been established where visitors can taste Songi mushrooms.

Meanwhile, fully utilizing the ecological characteristics of Namdaecheon where the mountains and sea meet, a new Songi Exhibition Hall and Salmon Exhibition Hall will be operated in the lawn plaza. The exhibition halls will offer hands-on craft programs related to Songi mushrooms and salmon, and visitors will have more opportunities to participate directly, such as a long jump contest using wooden salmon they make themselves.

Especially this year, a light sculpture festival will be held over a 200m section centered on the Namdaecheon lawn plaza. Under the theme ‘Light of Hospitality,’ about 12 works by domestic light sculpture artists will be exhibited, and a special light sculpture depicting salmon will be presented using over 300 lights on the Namdaecheon riverbed.

This Year's 'Yangyang Songi Salmon Festival' to Open from October 3 At the '2024 Yangyang Songi Salmon Festival,' the 'Light of Hospitality' exhibition will be held around the Namdaecheon stream tributary, promising to provide enjoyment to visitors even at night.

During the festival, visitors can enjoy Songi mushroom dishes and salmon dishes unique to Yangyang on-site. Along with a variety of foods made from local specialties, visitors can also enjoy various cultural programs such as traditional performances, music, and art exhibitions, making it a festival that all age groups, including families, can enjoy.

In particular, the fees for various experience programs will be exchanged for gift certificates usable within the region, benefiting both participants and local merchants, and is expected to have a positive impact on revitalizing the local economy.

Choi Tae-seop, Executive Director of the Yangyang Cultural Foundation, said, “This festival will be a special time to feel and share gratitude for nature and the environment, beyond just a food festival,” adding, “We have prepared the festival to fill Yangyang’s daily life with uniqueness, combining popularity and artistry, so we hope many people from all over the country will come and enjoy it.”
