Generative artificial intelligence (AI) startup FortyTwoMaru announced on the 20th that it has been selected as the lead organization for the development project of the "Defense Technology Information Generative AI System to Improve the Operating Rate of Core Weapon Systems," part of the "2024 Future Defense Bridge Technology Development Project" led by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Defense Acquisition Program Administration.
FortyTwoMaru has formed a consortium with the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI), which operates the Defense CBM+ Center, the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses (KIDA), which manages the integrated logistics information system, and the private AI data construction company DataMaker. The consortium will carry out a three-year project worth a total of 4.2 billion KRW, with the Army Logistics Command as the demand organization.
This initiative is part of Defense Innovation 4.0. As weapon systems become more complex, operating and maintenance costs are rising while military personnel are decreasing. In response to these changes, the project focuses on supporting efficient logistics support system operations by applying customized AI technology tailored to the defense sector.
FortyTwoMaru will develop a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) technology and question-answering (QA) system based on a large language model (LLM) for data related to the integrated logistics information system, as well as relevant laws, regulations, and guidelines. Additionally, together with KISTI, they plan to build a defense-specialized generative AI platform. The latest generative AI models, including defense-specialized LLMs and multimodal RAG, will also be applied throughout the entire logistics cycle.
They will also pursue additional utilization plans such as expanding the research and development outcomes to the entire environment of the three military branches and introducing generative AI for military process improvements like predictive maintenance and report generation.
