Donghwan Lee, Mayor of Goyang, "Full Effort to Attract Gyeonggi-type Science High School"

Increase in Demand for High-Tech Industry Talent Expected with Establishment of Economic Free Zone
"Creating a Virtuous Cycle Education System for Talented Individuals to Find Employment in Goyang"

Donghwan Lee, Mayor of Goyang, "Full Effort to Attract Gyeonggi-type Science High School" Lee Dong-hwan, mayor of Goyang City, urged senior officials at the executive meeting held on the 19th to actively participate in the new preliminary designation contest for Gyeonggi-type science high schools and to devote comprehensive efforts and attention to attracting a science high school.

On the 19th, Lee Dong-hwan, Mayor of Goyang Special City, stated at an executive meeting that he would actively participate in the new preliminary designation contest for Gyeonggi-type science high schools and devote comprehensive efforts and attention to attracting a science high school.

Mayor Lee said, "On the 11th, the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education announced the plan for the new designation contest of 'Gyeonggi-type Science High Schools.' Goyang City has delivered a proposal for the establishment of a science high school to the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education based on the TF for special-purpose high school establishment, securing a site for the science high school, gathering public opinion, and ensuring feasibility. In August, we signed a business agreement with the Goyang Office of Education and have been steadily preparing for the designation of the science high school."

He continued, "With the designation of the Goyang Free Economic Zone and the development of industrial complexes such as Ilsan Technovalley and Broadcasting Video Valley, the demand for talent in cutting-edge industries like bio-medical, IT, AI, and system semiconductors is expected to increase. We believe that excellent science and gifted high school students will become a core element of Goyang City's competitiveness," explaining the reason for attracting a science high school.

Mayor Lee emphasized, "We need to establish a virtuous cycle education system where talents born and raised in Goyang find employment in Goyang. The science high school is expected to be the hub of this virtuous cycle education system and play a pioneering role in nurturing talent for advanced industries. However, nearly half of Gyeonggi Province's 11 cities and counties are competing in the contest, making the competition fierce. Therefore, comprehensive efforts and attention are required not only from the related departments but from all departments."

He added, "In addition to this Gyeonggi-type science high school contest, we will build a 'Global Innovative Talent Management System' by attracting various talent development institutions such as gifted schools and comprehensive universities."
