Autumn Red Carpet Unfolds, Captivating Tourists' Attention
Between the valleys of Seonunsan in Gochang, Jeonbuk, the flower stalks of the red spider lily (Higanbana) are rising, exciting the hearts of tourists.
According to Gochang-gun on the 19th, the flower stalks of Seonunsan's red spider lilies have begun to emerge, and they are expected to bloom in full glory starting this weekend, creating a spectacular floral dance. The peak bloom period usually lasts about ten days after flowering.
The more you look, the hotter the passion and longing that arise. A red carpet unfolds deep within the Seonunsan valley. On slender flower stems, several red petals gather and curl, resembling a red umbrella opening. Even without anyone to admire them, the flowers bloom modestly.
The red spider lilies of Seonunsan sprout leaves around May, which wither by July, and then flower stalks emerge in early September. By late September, the flowers bloom vividly red. Although they come from the same root, the leaves and flowers never meet, symbolizing longing and wistfulness known as 'Hwayeopbulsang-gyeon Sangsacho (花葉不相見 想思草)'.
Contrary to their concealed appearance, the roots of the red spider lily are highly poisonous, strong enough to fell an elephant. It is said that in ancient times, many red spider lilies were planted around temples to help preserve the colorful paintings and murals.
Kim Jong-shin, head of the Forestry and Greenery Division, said, "I hope this will be an opportunity for visitors to enjoy the red spider lilies throughout Seonunsan and create beautiful memories," adding, "We will pay special attention to inspecting facilities to ensure that tourists visiting Gochang Seonunsan have no inconveniences."
